SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — A Springfield man is facing a hate crime charge after he allegedly called local Jewish organizations and left threatening messages.

Court records show Jeremiah D. Collins, 24, is charged with two counts: a Class 4 felony of hate crime and a Class B misdemeanor of harassment by telephone. State’s Attorney John Milhiser told WCIA he appeared in court on Friday and was denied pretrial release.

Miliser could not comment on the facts of the case, but several local Jewish centers WCIA spoke to confirmed they received multiple calls and messages this week that were antisemitic in nature.

Collins is due back in court on July 24.
