Co-President Todd Maurer's Welcome Letter

The Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis has roots back to 1904.  It was one of the first Jewish federations in North America. The mission of the predecessor of JFGI, and now of JFGI, has changed very little. JFGI still raises and distributes funds to the various Jewish agencies (Vital).  JFGI still coordinates important social services for the Jewish and greater Indianapolis community (Essential). JFGI does important work. We have strong leaders in the lay and professional community running a variety of Jewish agencies. Sam, Rachel, Evan and David are doing incredibly important work. Bonus, they are all very good at what they do for our community. However, there is much more to the Jewish community than just our agencies. We (I am referring to all of us in Indianapolis) as the JFGI, do first-in-class leadership development and mission work. It takes very little effort to understand the impact of Partnership2Gether, Atid and Koach. Indianapolis is leading, developing and creating programming that does not exist in other communities.

As we look ahead, we should also take a thoughtful look back, not to dwell, but to appreciate how far we have come. Until about twenty-five years ago, Jews in Indianapolis were not welcomed at many country clubs, golf clubs, certain social institutions and business organizations. Today Jews are not only welcomed, but Jews are leading these organizations in Indianapolis. It is time for all of us to think outside the proverbial box. Let’s not get stuck in “this is how we have always done it” mentality. Now is the time to envision the future for our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Together, let’s create a community that provides programming and services we can not get in the free market. Let’s work to create, inspire and develop opportunities for our community to gather, no matter how or where we practice our Judaism. It is time to build on the foundation that was started in 1904 AND remake it stronger for the future Indianapolis Jewish community. I implore you to forgive any past slights, annoyances or grievances with JFGI (I have!). It is time to move forward together. Our Jewish community AND JFGI only succeed and grow when we all work together.  Please come join me in this vitally important work.
