The Northeast Indiana Jewish Genealogy Society is excited to welcome Dr. Nicholas J. Evans, a Senior Lecturer in
diaspora history at the University of Hull, for a series of free virtual programs on Tuesdays in February, beginning at 2:30 p.m. These lectures are in conjunction with the Allen County Public Library Genealogy Center’s Tuesday afternoon virtual programs.

The Making of a Mosaic: European Migrant Journeys during the Age of Steam

Dr. Evans, a migrant historian, will explore questions such as ‘why did so many Europeans leave?’ ‘What was the journey really like?’ Why when an ancestor arrived at Ellis Island did they settle in the mid-west?’
• February 7th: Preparing to Leave Europe – This talk will illustrate how one can piece together the gathering of
ancestors from their village/town of birth to the moment they commenced their journey west
• February 14th: The Journey to America – This talk will illustrate the details of both the direct and indirect routes
enabling Europeans to reach the American eastern seaboard.
• February 21st: Internal Migration within the United States – This talk will explore how migrant records enable
one to piece together the numerous journeys that complete the migrant’s settlement in their new homes.

Besides teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students in the School of Humanities at the University of Hull,
Dr. Nicholas Evans uses his research on voluntary and coerced migration around the Atlantic to empower religious and
ethnic minority communities. He “relishes” in helping people unearth the personal stories of their migrant ancestors. Dr. Evans has spent the last 17 years as an academic researcher in the prize-winning Wilberforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation in his home city of Hull, England.
