This is the inaugural event of IU McKinney Jews & Allies (J&A), which brings together Jewish and non-Jewish allies to raise awareness about antisemitism, foster a safe environment for Jewish students, and create alliances that link antisemitism with other forms of forms of bias, hatred, and hostility. 12:00 p.m.   Keynote Lecture: Dr. Hans-Christian Jasch, Ph.D.

The Role of the German Judiciary after 1918 and during the Nazi and Post-War Eras

Location:  Wynne Courtroom        

                                                                          

Keynote Speaker Hans-Christian Jasch’s lecture will examine the problematic role the German judiciary played in discrediting the pre-Nazi democratic Weimar Republic, building and consolidating the “racial state” of the Third Reich and its difficulties in dealing with its criminal legacy - in particular, the role of the judiciary itself in the democratic reconstruction of Germany in the aftermath of World War II.

Dr. Jasch is a historian and an attorney for the German Federal Ministry of Interior in the field of public security.  He earned a Ph.D. in legal history from the Humboldt University in Berlin. 

Dr Jasch is an expert on law and public administration in Nazi Germany, Nazi planning for the “Final Solution,” and the German justice system’s efforts to deal with Holocaust crimes after 1945, among other topics.  Before joining the German Federal Ministry of Interior, Dr. Jasch was the Director of the Memorial and Educational Site House of the Wannsee Conference in Berlin. On this site, high-ranking Nazi officials met on January 20, 1942, to plan the deportation and murder of the European Jews.

Panel Discussion: Nazi Persecution of Non-Jewish Populations

Location:  Wynne Courtroom

Moderator:   Prof. Robert Katz

Dr. Hans-Christian Jasch.  Dr. Jasch will discuss the connections between American and Nazi race laws and policies and the Nazi regime’s persecution of LGBTQ persons.

Kathrin Janzen, Ph.D. candidate, Vienna University Department for Contemporary History.  Ms. Janzen will discuss the Nazi's mass murder of disabled persons and the issues surrounding the remembrance of the Nazi regime’s non-Jewish victims.

Dr. Hans-Christian Jasch

Dr. Jasch will give a presentation on Jewish lawyers who became pioneers in uncovering and prosecuting Nazi crimes.  This presentation is based on the exhibition he curated for the Memorial House of the Wannsee Conference in Berlin. This exhibit will be on display in the Ruth Lilly Law Library.
