Fences

By Marissa Missan

I look out the window and past the barbed wire to see a beauty taken from you. I see sunshine and can choose to soak in its warmth. I can walk the path or sit on the steps or stand in the shade.

But I cannot capture this bright sky and cast your shadows away, so how do I face your reflection in the glass?

You are more than can be imagined by locks of hair, worn shoes, or a captured photograph. You are a whole person.

You are lives and thoughts I'll never know, thoughts worthy of more time... a different time.

If I shut my eyes in my freedom, will I still see you? Will you help me remove fences embedded in the hearts of generations?

We see, we remember, we suffer, we support, we learn, we teach, we continue in the koach that is you.
